Five gift ideas for the hard to please kayak angler!

I spend a ton of time paddling, fishing, and pummeling the crap out of kayak fishing gear. So…who better than me to give you the skinny on some good “stuff” to buy for your favorite kayak angler. Here’s are some great ideas that any kayak angler would love to see under the tree this holiday season!

The “River Stick” by Palmetto Kayak Fishing, LLC

The River Stick is really a short 3 or 3.5 foot version of  what is commonly called a “Stake-Out-Pole”. When slid down through the scupper hole in your sit-on-top kayak this little gem will find a crack in the river rock and hold you and your kayak in place. It’s great for keeping you in position in shallow slower current areas of rocky rivers. It can also be used as a “parking break” when you want to get out of your kayak and take a lunch break on shore. I’ve used it extensively this season. It’s extremely durable and is an indispensable piece of gear. I also have the normal 5′ model for fishing lakes. I never leave the launch without my PKF Stake-Out-Pole!

Temple Fork Outfitters Gary Loomis Signature Series Fresh Water Rod

At an MSRP of $99, these rods offer exceptional quality. I’ve been flinging baits with Temple Fork Outfitters fresh water rods for 3 seasons and can’t say enough about their durability, sensitivity, and performance. They are hard to beat at the stated price point! The TFO rods offer a wide range of power choices in the 7′ to 7.5′ lengths. This is excellent news for kayak fisherman who favor longer rods.  I’m not the only kayak angler who holds these rods in such high regard. Roughly 40%-50% of my guide clients end up purchasing a TFO rod after I put one in their hands during my Guided Kayak Fishing Classes.

Winco’s Custom Lures “Predator Craw Kit”

If  was forced to use only one lure from spring through early fall,  it would be the Winco Predator Craw. This bait accounts for more big smallmouth (18″+) during my guiding season than any other bait. The flutter head that comes with the kit is extremely snag resistant. The Predator Craw is most effect dragged 6″-8″with long pauses between the drags. The hand full of colors available in this bait line where selected to mimic the predominant color variations found in most crayfish populations. One of my favorites is the “Susquehanna Craw” color. This  is a great color in any river or lake where you have crawfish with a slight blue hue coloring on their shells.

Yakattack GearTrack System

Did you ever wish you could easily add rod holders, GPS, or Sonar units to your kayak without drilling a ton of holes? Did you ever wish you could slide your rod holder or electronics closer to you while in your kayak but then move it out of the way while entering or exiting your kayak? Well, armed with the GearTrack System you can add a track system to any kayak. let the creative rigging begin!
